The founders of the Belton Family Reunion consider their roots to be of South Carolina ancestry, originating primarily in the Fairfield and Kershaw Counties of the state. The idea of uniting the maternal and paternal descendants originated in 1968 at a family cookout for descendants of the Brown-Belton clan at the home of Mrs. Etta Parham in Chillum, Maryland. It was there that plans were initiated to invite all descendants of Beltons to participate in a "National" reunion This became a reality in 1973 when this reunion was held in Columbia, South Carolina at the Masonic Temple. The number of people attending proved to be overwhelming to the point that the informal method of planning and accommodating a group of this size was abandoned. Subsequent reunions have been more organized with an established group of officers and geographic districts with representatives on the Board of Directors.
Successive reunions were held on an annual basis in: •Columbia, South Carolina -1974, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1983,1988, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2002, 2005 and 2008 • Paterson, New Jersey -1976 • Winston Salem, North Carolina -1977 • Charlotte, North Carolina -1979, 1984, 1992, 1996, 2000 (a combined hosted reunion with the Edmund Belton and Mississippi Reunion groups), 2004 and 2010 • Washington, DC -1980, 1985, 1990, 1995. 1999, 2003 and 2006 • Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey -1982 • High Point, North Carolina -1986 • Atlanta, Georgia -1987 • Virginia Beach, Virginia -1988 • Richmond Virginia -1993 • Kansas City, Missouri -1998 (the Belton Family were guest of the Edmond Belton Reunion) • Tampa, Florida -2001
